TV Has Sound but No Picture? How to Find the Cause and Fix It

When a TV has sound but no picture, the TV is switched on and something is getting audio to the speakers, so the fault sits in one of two places: the video signal never reaches the screen, or the screen cannot light up what it receives. The first is usually a cable, input or settings problem you can fix in a few minutes. The second is usually a failed backlight or board. One quick test, pressing Home on the TV remote, tells you which half you are dealing with.

First: is the problem the TV or the device plugged into it?

Press the Home or Menu button on the TV's own remote, not the streaming box or cable box remote.

  • The TV's menu appears. The screen works. Whatever you were watching is not sending a picture the TV can show. Go to the section on the input, cable and source.
  • The screen stays black, even for the menu. The fault is inside the TV, or a TV setting is turning the picture off. Go to the flashlight test.

Samsung's black-screen troubleshooting guide starts with the same check, before any cable work.

The flashlight test: backlight or board?

Most LCD and LED TVs make their picture with a panel that has no light of its own. A row of LEDs behind it, the backlight, shines through. If the backlight dies, the picture is still there, you just cannot see it.

  1. Play something with sound, so you know the TV is running.
  2. Turn the room lights off.
  3. Hold a phone flashlight a few centimetres from the screen and shine it at an angle.
  4. Look closely around the bright spot for faint shapes, menus or moving images.

If you can see a dim picture, the panel and the video signal are fine and the backlight, or the power circuit that feeds it, has failed. If you see nothing at all, the cause is more likely a board inside the TV or a setting.

OLED TVs have no backlight, since every pixel makes its own light, so this test does not apply to them.

Do not open the TV to look. The power supply inside can hold a charge after it is unplugged, and backlight strips sit behind the panel, which is fragile and easy to crack.

Try these settings and resets before calling for repair

Do a full power cycle

Unplug the TV at the wall, not just with the remote, and leave it for at least a minute. If the TV has a physical power button, hold it for a few seconds while it is unplugged. Plug it straight into the wall rather than a power strip, then turn it on. It can clear a TV that has frozen with the picture off, and it costs nothing to try.

Check the settings that turn the picture off on purpose

Some TVs have a screen-off option meant for listening to music or radio apps with the panel dark. It usually lives in the power, energy-saving or eco menu, and the name varies by brand. Pressing a button on the remote, or the same menu option, turns the screen back on. Also check that the Backlight or Brightness setting has not been pushed to zero, and switch off any aggressive energy-saving mode. You can only change these if the TV menu is visible, which is one more reason to start with the Home button.

Update the TV's software

If the picture comes back after a power cycle but keeps dropping out, look for a software update in the TV's support or system menu. A screen that goes black at random, with sound carrying on, is sometimes a firmware fault rather than failing hardware.

When the menu works but the input is black

If the TV's own menu shows up fine, the TV is healthy. The device you are watching through, or the connection to it, is the problem.

Check the input and the cable

  1. Confirm the TV is on the right input, for example HDMI 2 if the box is plugged into HDMI 2.
  2. Make sure the box itself is on. Many boxes have a small status light.
  3. Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends and push it back in firmly.
  4. Move the cable to another HDMI port on the TV.
  5. Swap in a different HDMI cable you know works.

Samsung TVs also have a built-in cable check under Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > Signal Information > HDMI Cable Test. Samsung notes it works best on cables under about 2 metres (6 feet).

Take the middle devices out

A soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch or splitter between the box and the TV is a common cause of sound without picture. The device in the middle can pass audio while failing to pass video, especially at 4K or HDR. Plug the box straight into the TV for a test. If the picture returns, the device in the middle, or the cable to it, is the problem. Our guide to HDMI ARC and eARC shows how to wire a soundbar so the picture goes directly to the TV.

Ask the box for a picture the TV can show

A streaming box set to a resolution, frame rate or HDR format that the TV or that HDMI port cannot display can leave you with a black screen while the audio plays on. This often happens after moving a box to a different TV, or after changing a video setting.

On an Apple TV 4K or Apple TV HD, Apple's support instructions are to hold Menu and Volume Down on the remote for five seconds. The box then steps through resolutions, switching every 20 seconds, and you select OK when you see a picture. On newer Siri Remotes the Menu button is the one marked as Back. Other boxes have their own reset method, so check the maker's help pages. Once the picture is back, set the resolution to one your TV supports and try turning off HDR or frame-rate matching to see whether the black screen comes back.

Many 4K TVs also have a per-port setting that allows full-bandwidth 4K HDR signals. Samsung calls it Input Signal Plus and LG calls it HDMI Ultra HD Deep Colour, and other brands use their own names. If a 4K box shows black on one port but works on another, compare this setting between the two ports. Our explainers on 4K versus 1080p and HDR versus SDR explain what these signals ask of the TV and the cable.

Only one app shows black?

If the home screen of your box looks normal but one app or one channel plays sound over a black picture, the TV and cable are fine. Close and reopen the app, restart the box, and check for an app update. Some protected video will not display if a device in the HDMI chain fails the copy-protection handshake, so a direct box-to-TV connection is worth testing here too. If you are not sure what your box does compared with the TV's built-in apps, read what a set-top box is.

When it is a hardware fault

If the flashlight shows a dim picture, or the TV's own menu stays black after a power cycle and a check of the screen-off and brightness settings, you are looking at a repair. The usual culprits are the LED backlight strips, the power board that drives them, the timing control board (T-Con) or the main board.

Check your warranty and any extended cover from the retailer or card issuer before paying for anything. Backlight replacement means taking the panel out of its frame, which is a job for someone who does it regularly. On an older or smaller TV, get a quote first and set it against the price of a new set before you agree to the work.

Why a streaming setup has more places to go wrong

A TV used only with an antenna and the built-in apps has one signal path. Add a streaming box, a soundbar and maybe a games console, and every HDMI link becomes another place where audio can arrive without video. Test those links one at a time, starting with the one closest to the TV. If your connection is the problem, rather than the picture, our guide on how to connect a TV to Wi-Fi covers the network side. Frequently asked questions

Why did my TV suddenly go black but still has sound?

The most common reasons are a failed backlight, a loose or failing HDMI connection, the wrong input, or a box sending a signal the TV cannot display. Press Home on the TV remote: if the TV menu appears, the problem is the source or cable; if it does not, the problem is inside the TV.

Can a bad HDMI cable cause sound but no picture?

Yes. A damaged or underrated cable can carry audio while failing to carry video, especially for 4K and HDR signals that need more bandwidth. Swap in a cable you know works, or try a shorter one, before assuming the TV is faulty.

How do I fix a Roku TV, Samsung or LG TV that turns on with no picture?

Start with the same steps on any brand: press Home to see whether the menu appears, power cycle at the wall, check the input and cable, then do the flashlight test. Brand menus differ, but the causes are the same.

Is a TV with sound but no picture worth repairing?

It depends on the cause and the TV. A cable, setting or input problem costs nothing to fix. A backlight or board repair is worth a quote on a newer or larger TV, and often not worth it on an older, smaller one.

Does the flashlight test work on OLED TVs?

No. OLED pixels make their own light, so there is no backlight to fail and no hidden picture to find. A black OLED screen with sound points to a board, a setting or the signal.
